Rigging

One of the most important and misunderstood concepts in fly fishing is line rigging. The staff of the NCA will professionally spool the proper amount of backing onto your reel and attach the backing to the fly line at a minimal price. Backing, for both 20 pound and 30 pound test, is 8 cents per yard. A typical trout reel will take from 50 to 150 yards. Most often a simple Albright knot is used. Check the instruction manual for the amount of backing that your reel will require.

Note: If you purchase a fly reel and fly line at North Country angler, the above service is included in the price of the reel and line.

Special Knots & Splices

The connection between the fly line and backing becomes critical when fishing for larger fish such as Atlantic Salmon and Stripers. Because of that we can provide a "blind" splice which blends the line into the backing so that the backing becomes almost like a "running line".

Cost is $7.50 per line

Some newer lines have no core and require loop to loop connections. We will install a blind splice loop or a spider hitch loop in the backing and a nail knot loop on the fly line for those systems.

Cost is $10.00 per line

Needle Knot on the business end of your fly line is the absolute best way to attach the leader to the fly line. The needle knot maintains the "straight flow" of the line into the leader and is extremely strong. Most people have a perfection loop tied in the end of the mono that has been needle knotted to the fly line. A perfection loop facilitates quick changes of tippets while fishing.

Cost is $5.00 per line
