The Griffiths Gnat

Designed to look like a mass of midges on the water, this simple fly is excellent during those frustrating midge hatches on ponds.

With just two components (hackle & herl) the hardest part of tying this fly is the size. For some (you young folks with good eyes) it will not present a problem, but for the rest of us with eyes that have been worked too hard for too many years it can be a challenge.

So here it is, the Griffiths Gnat:

The Pattern

Hook: Standard Dry
Thread: Black
Tail: none
Rib: optional [x-thin brass wire]
Body: Peacock Herl
Hackle: Grizzly

Tying Instructions:Tied in sizes 14 to 24, tie in an appropriately sized grizzly hackle by the tip, create a herl rope (in the larger sizes) or simply wrap several strands of herl from the bend to where you will create the head, spiral wrap the hackle to front, whip finish and lacquer.
